The City of Axtell, located in Marshall County in northeastern Kansas, will demolish an existing building and construct a new fire station on this site. The project does not have an estimated monetary value as of January 1, 2003. The project is awaiting the engineering assessment. KAN STEP is an acronym for Kansas Small Town Environment Program that is funded through the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. KAN STEP has successfully used "sweat equity" to help communities reduce costs of water system improvements and now, fire stations and community centers.

The Project Representatives at Axtell are Kevin Anderson and Gary Buessing; The Grant Administer is Donna Crawford of Governmental Assistance Services; the Architect is Donnie Marrs of DMA Architects, Salina. The Kansas Rural Water Association provides the Inspection Services and Technical Assistance.

Demolition

The old, tile block quonset style building was demolished and hauled away by volunteers in late June. That building had housed a car dealership 70 years ago and then later, served as a bus barn. Dave Koch brought his excavator in to begin digging the footings for the new fire station on July 8. Axtell's new fire station/EMS building will measure 45 feet x 145 feet.

The work begins...
