KAN STEP
Burns Community Center

A
new community center is under construction at the the City of Burns, located in
Marion County in central Kansas. With an estimated market value of $609,640,
this project will be subsidized through a $338,381 KAN STEP grant and volunteer
participation. KAN STEP is an acronym for Kansas Small Town Environment Program
that is funded through the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. KAN STEP
has successfully used "sweat equity" to help communities reduce costs of water
system improvements and now, fire stations and community centers.
The Project Representative and Grant Administrator at Burns is City Clerk
Carolyn Koehn; the Architect is Dan Hall of BG Consultants. The Kansas Rural
Water Association provides Inspection Services and Assistance; Shane Holthaus
and Steve Duryea are the Technical Assistants responsible. The community
center will have a kitchen, a meeting area/dining room, two bathrooms, and a 190
sq. ft. concrete storm shelter for approximately 40 people.
The Goal: New 4,000 sq. ft. community center
