The City of McFarland, located in Wabaunsee County in east-central Kansas, is constructing a new fire station. The fire station has an estimated market value of $389,000 and will be subsidized through a $226,000 KAN STEP grant and volunteer participation. KAN STEP is an acronym for Kansas Small Town Environment Program that is funded through the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. KAN STEP has successfully used "sweat equity" to help communities reduce costs of water system improvements and now, fire stations and community centers.

The Project Representative at McFarland is Terry McDaniel; the Grant Administrator is Donna Crawford of Governmental Assistance Services; the Architect is Bill Strait with Bucher, Willis, and Ratliff. The Kansas Rural Water Association provides Inspection Services and Assistance; Shane Holthaus and Steve Duryea are the Technical Assistants responsible. The new fire station will have three truck bays, a maintenance bay, a training room, and a bathroom. The pouring of the slab is the only item to be contracted out.

The Existing Building

The existing fire station in McFarland was built in 1924 and was initially used as the city hall. An addition was added to include the city shop and then in the late 50's it was converted into the city's fire station.
