Winona receives $232,600 KAN STEP Grant for a new fire station
The
City of Winona, located in Logan County in northwestern Kansas, has been awarded
a KAN STEP grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce to construct a new
fire station. Construction will begin in late April or early May 2006.
Winona's project has an estimated retail value of $389,994. The city will
receive a KAN STEP grant not to exceed $232,600. Local volunteers will
contribute a total of $157,394 in labor services.
The project representative at Winona is Jeff Harper. Grant administration will
be provided by Michele Kippes of Northwest Kansas Planning and Development. Don
Marrs of DMA Architects, Salina, is the architect for the project. Kansas Rural
Water Association will provide inspection services and technical assistance.
Winona's new fire station will have 4,800 square feet of floor space. The 60' x
80' building will include seven drive truck bays, which will include an EMS
truck bay, a training room, office area, restrooms with showers, supply room and
mechanical room. The partitioned rooms will have storage accessible for the
truck bay area.
KAN STEP is an acronym Kansas Small Town Environment Program. KAN STEP has
successfully used "sweat equity" to help communities reduce costs of water
systems, community centers and fire stations. The program in Kansas is the only
one in the U.S. that is constructing buildings.
